At the age of 4 Jacob Koller began studying classical piano. At age 5 he gave his first piano recital and before entering high school he won over 10 classical piano competitions (including the Arizona Yamaha Piano Competition). In high school he devloped a new passion for jazz and improvisation. He began working professionally in the Phoenix area from the age of 14, playing with the finest jazz musicians in the valley including Dennis Roland, Jesse Mcguire, Margo Reid, Dwight Killian, Dom Moio, and Fred Forney. He attended Arizona State University on a full jazz scholarship and studied under Chuck Mahronic. He moved to Japan in 2009 and opened up his own music school teaching jazz piano and improvisation to children and adults. He currently resides in Kawasaki, Japan where he works as a teacher, performer, arranger, engraver, YouTuber and composer.

Brian Allen

Piano, pencil and paper were Brian Allen’s first instruments. He uses them, plus a camera and trombone, to create the Piano Bop universe and his own multimedia world of film, books and music. Brian studied with Roswell Rudd and Milford Graves and attended the Banff Institute, meeting and forming “Brainkiller” with Jacob Koller. Beginning close to home as a teacher at Brazosport College and Houston area public schools, more recently he taught at Music Matters in Sri Lanka and Jacob’s International School of Music in Tokyo and has given workshops at over 100 universities and public schools including Harvard, Berklee, Bruckner Jazz Institute, UNAM, Prague & Luzern Jazz Conservatory. He has received artist residencies in Morocco, Paris and Sapporo, grants from Meet the Composer, and performs with improvising composers such as Anthony Braxton, Corey Fogel, Dominique Leone, Tony Malaby, Reuben Radding and other friends around the world. Brian has a MM in Composition and a BA in Trombone from Texas Tech University and is an Edwards Trombones Artist.
